Countryfile 2023

My Journey as a Self-Shooting PD on BBC’s Countryfile

In the realm of television production, few opportunities can rival the exhilarating experience of working on a renowned program like BBC’s Countryfile. As a self-shooting PD (Producer / Director), I had the privilege of being immersed in the enchanting world of nature, capturing breathtaking landscapes, and sharing compelling stories with millions of viewers.

As a self-shooting PD on Countryfile, I was entrusted with capturing the essence of the Northern Irish countryside. From rolling hills and verdant meadows to serene lakes and ancient forests, I had the opportunity to witness nature’s unparalleled beauty firsthand. The program provided a platform to celebrate the diversity of young farmers across the UK. Whether it was checking on sheep in what was one of the hottest days of the summer, feeding pigs or prepping for a farm open day, I was able to bring these captivating scenes to life through my lens.

As a self-shooting PD, I was given the freedom to not only direct the production but also capture the footage myself. This role allowed me to establish a deeper connection with the subjects and the environment. It was an extraordinary privilege to be the eyes behind the camera, witnessing the unfolding of magical moments and preserving them for the viewers. This level of involvement created an immersive experience that made me appreciate the intricacies of every shot, adding a personal touch to the storytelling process.

One of the most rewarding aspects of working on Countryfile was the opportunity to create meaningful impact. The program not only raises awareness about the importance of young farmers and the next generation of producers but also inspires viewers to engage with their surroundings actively. By highlighting environmental issues, showcasing sustainable practices, and promoting responsible land management, Countryfile plays a crucial role in driving positive change. As a self-shooting PD, I felt privileged to contribute to this mission and empower viewers to appreciate, protect, and preserve our natural heritage.

Working as a self-shooting PD on BBC’s Countryfile was a brilliant experience that allowed me to combine my love for nature, storytelling, and visual artistry. From capturing lovely landscapes to unveiling compelling narratives, I discovered a profound sense of fulfilment in being part of a program that educates, entertains, and inspires millions. Countryfile not only allowed me to unleash my creative potential but also deepened my connection with the environment. It was an adventure like no other, leaving an indelible mark on both my personal and professional journey.
